ON THE HORIZON
As when he first moved to California in 1988, Stearns is determined to find life's next big thing. Real estate used to be the answer, but his current companies are performing comfortably and consistently. So Stearns has set out to make himself uncomfortable again and in more than one way. That's the only way you learn, right?
First, there's the direct marketing company he has founded called RainMaker Studios. One of its projects involves promoting videos starring "Retro Bill," a 1950s-style character who brings safety and anti-drug messages to children throughout the country. The videos have been endorsed and are being used in the national Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in schools throughout the country.
There are also his upcoming nuptials. That impromptu trip to Mt. Hood paid off when Stearns sought and received the approval of his future in-laws before asking his girlfriend to marry him. The woman in question her name is Mindy Burbano, a part-time actress and full-time entertainment reporter for WKLA, the WB affiliate in Los Angeles eventually said yes.
"I look at her and I think, 'Man, I'm not doing anything at all,'" Stearns said. "She has her hands in everything. She's always doing something new."
Most of all, though, there are the ideas themselves. For Stearns, nothing beats the thrill of turning them into self-sustaining businesses and helping them grow.
"I'm having a blast," he said. "When I create a company it's because I'm passionate about it. And the great thing is, most of them seem to work. There are some failures, of course; there always are. But I just want to continue to create, to find the things I'm passionate about and put them to work."
