LESSONS LEARNED ... AND TAUGHT
Lee isn't trying to change the world just improve his corner of it. He hopes the Kurk Lee Foundation will one day raise enough money to allow him to open his own recreation center in the city.
"There's nothing for a lot of these kids to do," he said. "When I was growing up, we had plenty to do homework, baseball, basketball leagues. Today, there aren't many of those programs around. (The kids) need somewhere to go after school where they can do their homework, work on computers or take part in different activities."
In the meantime, Lee simply wants to teach the kids he mentors to pass along some of the knowledge he has accumulated through time, travel and experience. Included in that knowledge is the most important lesson he learned from his years of playing basketball.
"If I knew then what I know now that you have to work hard to achieve your goals I'd still be playing in the NBA," he said. "It's a learning experience and not just in athletics, but in life. I just want to help them maintain the motivation to get their high school diploma, or play professional sports, or whatever. You have to keep that motivation and always look for improvement. Then you can achieve anything."
