White House witness
Martha Joynt Kumar interprets the White House press

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
Her colleagues in the West Wing enjoy her as well, especially her penchant for motor scooters and desserts.
"She rides around Washington on a scooter," laughed Lindlaw, referring to Kumar's Vespa. "I ride a motorcycle, so it's always a thrill for me to see her marching toward the Northwest Gate with a helmet under her arm. And Martha is beloved around the White House because she makes the most delectable brownies. When she leaves a Tupperware container of those things lying around, it's like sharks attacking."
Kumar's passion isn't confections, though. It's communications, and she's passing that passion on to her students. For Deans, that might be the most important thing she does.
"News has almost become entertainment in a lot of ways," he said. "Well-educated citizens have to understand the difference between 'The Daily Show' and the nightly news. They have to know the difference between fact and opinion, between a celebrity and a statesman, between a politician and a leader. Personally, I think courses like this should be mandatory for liberal arts students."
